How to Change a Sonic Innovation Filter
In this video, we're going to talk about how to change the filter in a Sonic Innovations hearing aid.
Before we do that, let’s first talk about how to not have to change the filter so much. It's real simple.
How to Maintain your Hearing Aids
Everyday, when you take your hearing aids off, follow these five steps:
Get a Kleenex
Hold the receiver (the red or blue box that meets the wire and goes down into your ear)
Lay Kleenex over the little rubber dome,
Pinch the little rubber dome as firm as you can with your fingers
Release, Rotate, and pinch again
Don’t worry about squeezing too hard. You’re not going to hurt the hearing aid. You want to squeeze it firm to get all the wax out of the dome.
If you do this every day, that's really about all you're going to have to do. If you don't do it, every day wax is going to get through the tip of the dome, it's going to get down into the little white circle, which is the filter. And if the filter gets plugged, it's not going to work, and you're not going to hear anything.
This is the number one problem that we get phone calls on on a weekly basis. Somebody will call and say, “my hearing aids dead”. It's not dead, it's just plugged, all we need to do is change the filter.
So let’s talk about that right now.
How to Change the Filter
To change the filter, the first thing that we have to do is take the dome off of the end of the hearing aid. The dome is the little rubber cap that you stick into your ear.
To take it off pinch the extra slack on the dome. Pull it tight over to the edge of the dome.
And then just kind of roll your hands together, and the dome will pop off.
Once you have the dome off, we now are ready to change the filter. In the case of Sonic hearing aids, the filters come on an oval card with six black tabs. When you pull a tab out, you’ll see at two ends on the tab. One end has a white tip, and the other is a black tip.
The white tip is the new filter, so the first thing that you’re going to do is put the black tip into the end of the hearing aid. This will take the old filter out. When you do, it's going to click and lock and grab a hold of the old filter and pull it out.
Then you’ll slide over to the white tip, push the new one on. And when you pull the tab away, the new filter will stay in place.
Finally, you’ll put the dome back onto the hearing aid. To do so, line it up with the center hole inside the dome and push it back on there.
Now you’re ready to go! That’s how you change a filter on a Sonic Innovations hearing aid.
Quick Bonus Tip:
Wherever you put your hearing aid at night, whether it’s on a charger for rechargeable hearing aids, or just on the kitchen table with disposable battery hearing aids. Wherever you plug in your charger or leave your hearing aids, put a box of Kleenex right next to him.
That way you don't have to think really hard to remember to clean them like we said at the start of this article. That just makes life a lot easier.
